RIP Sapphire, 9/26/08
Sep. 27th, 2008 04:02 amYesterday my cat, Sapphire, got put down. He was 13 years old. He had a broken sternum and what appeared to be a fungal infection. Each time the vet removed oxygen, he started crashing because he couldn't breathe.
He was the cat I got when I was 7 years old after my parents got divorced so I could have "someone to talk to," as my mother put it. Sapphire had the prettiest blue eyes, and since I was 7, I was very excited that the color coincided with my birthstone- hence his name. He was my confidante, and fellow adventurer. I would put him on my shoulder and we would go on walks to the park. Late at night, I would cuddle him under the crook of my arm and we would read books together.
He was the most gentle cat I have ever known, and very social with other cats. When he was 2 years old, we got a kitten, Smokey, to be his companion. He hissed once, then settled into the new arrangement amicably, even letting Smokey (who is much needier) "wean" off of him a couple of times!
He loved climbing- trees, cabinets, anything! My mom and I lived in a high-ceiling townhouse with ledges around the ceiling. When we first got Sapphire, we got scared because we thought he had gotten lost. It turns out, he loved to go up and hide in the ledges!
Having Mao and Pica helps, and I've been giving them extra love since I can't give any to Sapphire anymore. I miss you Sapphire!
