So, I am alive!

I also have a reasonably large (~2.5-3 in) scar on my neck. In the interests of not wanting it to look awful for the rest of my life or not wanting to be made fun of/called ugly... how does one go about preventing massive scarring?

Anyone know?

A few tips

Scarring can be somewhat reduced by applying vitamin E to the incision area once the scabs are off for a few weeks to a few months. It works better for some than for others.
If you still feel sensitive about it after that you can also apply special scar-concealing makeup, though you can be lazy and save it for photo ops an special occassions.
However, I say wear it proudly, and if anyone gives you grief tell them you got it fighting a werewolf but you've never been quite the same since it bit you... ;)

Yep yep - couldn't agree more - Vitamin E is good, cocoa-butter works well too - and I agree, wear it proudly and keep 'em guessing. :)

Yup, the vitamin E and such do help quite a bit and also keep the scar tissue from getting stiff/dry/rigid and pulling. In the event of scarring, there are silicone-based covers that can be worn on the scar itself that will reduce it with time.

What I have been told, and am doing for my knee, is to let it heal from the inside out by changing the dressing every day and keeping a scab from forming by cleaning it with a warm, slightly soapy washcloth (very, very painful), then putting on some antibiotic ointment and a new dressing. I guess it depends on what type of wound you are healing though. I don't think it would work very well for an incision that has been stitched shut.
